Chase season is on the way!

The GFS setup for 6 pm Monday March 8th. It's still a long way off but it could be a chase day in the southern Plains, especially when the upper level winds are considered. Can it be long before we start seeing daytime CAPE in the Mid-Atlantic?

Night time lightning video from May 09 OK chase

video

This is posted for me...specifically to treat my chronic case of SDS that I can't seem to shake given the eternal continuance of the Winter of 2010. (If it helps you too that's a good thing.)
It's from May 8th near Ardmore Oklahoma.

Let the convection begin!

Here during - hopefully - Northern Virginia's last major snowstorm of the 2010 winter I have my fingers crossed that the current weather pattern and its abundant moisture will lead to a productive storm chase season both here and in the Alley. Looking back over my chase chronicles there have been several years that I've had a semi-successful Virginia chase during the first half of March. If that is so this year we're only a month away from convective bliss! At any rate March is the time that I'll make a command decision regarding mobile internet access again so I've been reviewing my choices. There are several new options this year and I'm excited to see them. Meanwhile, the snow has to stop soon right? This IS the South!!

Va Tech storm chase team

I attended the initial meeting for the 2010 Virginia Tech storm chase trip last night in Blacksburg. The university website featured the program on its front page as well. It's really cool to see my alma mater taking steps to set up a meteorology program. I've been hoping for one there since my undergraduate days in the '70's. I doubt I'll be chasing with them this year but I'm at least under consideration as an alternate driver. In the meantime I'm hoping this snowy Virginia weather pattern leads to a successful chase season both here (for me!) and in the Plains (for them!).
