First snow of the season?
A week after Thanksgiving (which we enjoyed at home with our kids and my mom) the forecasts are pointing to an Alberta clipper racing through the Mid-Atlantic Saturday night. If the temperature and moisture phasing stay together we could get a light dusting (~1 inch) in our area by Sunday morning. However, with the attendant upper level East Coast trough drawing down some pretty chilly air over the next several days the longer range models are hinting at a significant coastal storm sometime during the middle of next week. These are usually nail-biters for the Mid-Atlantic, causing commuters to cringe, schoolkids to perform elaborate "snow dances" in hopes of gettting out of school, and grocery stores to exult as panicked shoppers stock up for "The Big One". (If you think I'm exaggerating then you haven't been near a grocery store in the Mid-Atlantic during the runup to a snow forecast.) Personally, I'm in a countdown for the 2009 storm chase season, which could kick off as early as March; the 2008 season started for me on 3/8. Only 90+ days to go!!
