26 April Virginia chase

Since SPC had us under a "See Text" 5% chance of severe storms, and since the models indicated decent instability and little cap, I had my eyes on the sky. When radar indicated a line of storms moving northeast toward Culpeper and Warrenton (here) I made my way westward and parked in southeastern Culpeper county (the white "X" marks the spot) to watch the now severe-warned storm and enjoy the CGs and even a bit of greenage, but no true lowerings or wall clouds appeared. I took a few still pictures - which I promptly erased by accident - and took almost 3 minutes of video which I do have (5/10/08: just added the vidcap of the CG backlighting some of the features I was watching). Since the storm wasn't moving very fast I stayed behind it to watch the rear flank while staying out of the heavy rain. After it moved off across the river I headed back home to check radar and promptly found an interesting storm in Caroline county (here), so I left home again to head east. Although the storm was picturesque from afar (as seen above) I chose to stay north of it on State Rte 3 rather than plow right into it on Rte 17 as I really didn't want to verify severe hail and heavy rain today. I saw more CGs and a few potentially interesting features, but nothing organized. It was bit of balm for the tortured stormchaser soul...and Monday looks even better!
